| Biography |
Tobias Matthay was a Student, Professor and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. He was awarded the Sterndale Bennett Scholarship to the Academy in 1871. He was appointed a sub-professor for piano in 1876 and a full professor from 1880 until 1925. His debut as a pianist was in November 1884.
He taught many of Britain's finest pianists including Dame Myra Hess, Harriet Cohen, Irene Scharrer, Clifford Curzon, Dame Moura Lympany, York Bowen, Harold Craxton, Vivian Langrish, Eileen Joyce, Nina Milkina and Eunice Norton, among others. Founder of the Tobias Matthay Piano School (which he opened in 1905 while continuing to teach at the Academy) and Method, he was the author of many educational works on piano technique.
The National Archives Ref ED74/6 102740 contains he correspondence between The School (Matthay) and the Department of Education, in order to gain a plea for an Annual Grant similar to that received by the Royal Academy of Music.

The Academy also holds a large file of correspondence between Matthay and Sir John McEwen, when the latter was Principal of the Royal Academy of Music.
